WHERE ARE THE SHOWERS OF BLESSING?

When you became a Christian and learned the Bible said such things as, “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do (John 14:14), didn’t you get a little expectant? It is a Christian dream to realize that you can ask and receive from God.

You could well expect God to see that you had a nice home and a good job or career. Beyond that, a healthy body and a happy family growing in God’s Word. It would be natural to expect God to touch every area of your life, including your body, finances, and so on.

But do things work out like that? More often than not, your finances hurt, your kids fall in with the wrong crowd, health problems arise, and even the car gives you a bad time. It seems like there is always something to frustrate your ambitions and keep you from getting ahead. That in turn puts pressure on your marriage. You go to church, pray, and give. Still, there is no shower of blessings in your life. When you look at your Christian friends, many don’t seem to be any better off.

TOO STRESSED TO BE BLESSED

The thinking Christian asks himself, “Things are not working out as they’re supposed to. I know God loves me. He says He will not withhold anything from me. What’s wrong? Could it be my fault? Maybe I’m not in the place where He can bless me.” Now that’s smart thinking.

God is a FATHER, a “family man” if you will. He is indeed extremely wealthy and eager to share his wealth with his children. It means nothing to God to own the vast wealth of heaven unless He can share it. It pains Him when He cannot pour out His blessing.

As God looks upon those born of His Spirit, destined to bring Him joy forever, He LONGS with the desire to touch lives with good things: Things like health, financial success, and the good life. It thrills Him to lavish on us healthy bodies, satisfying jobs, and nice homes.

WE WON’T LET HIM

That’s right. We’re the ones who tie His hands. The truth of this is found in a verse you know very well:

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt. 6:33 NAS).

What does it mean? PUT CHRIST FIRST. If a person commits himself to doing this, God guarantees in writing that the blessings will flow. But until we do, GOD’S HANDS ARE TIED.

Now, you might think you are not doing too badly as a Christian. You don’t lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery, or intentionally hurt others. Beyond that, you have a consistent prayer life, you are a pillar in the church, and you tithe a portion of your income. As far as you can see, God’s blessings ought to be raining on you in abundance.

In spite of all your credits, you are failing in one area. You may tell me you have committed yourself to Jesus, but I tell you He’s far from being NUMBER ONE in your life. Yes, you have avoided the BIG SINS. I applaud you for that. But there is something you have overlooked.

THE LITTLE SINS

This may come as a shock. The life of the average “committed” Christian is LITERALLY FLOODED WITH LITTLE SINS. When you add up all the tiny disobediences in your life and behold that total is every bit as bad in God’s sight as any of the so-called BIG SINS.

When I began to check my life for little sins,” I was floored. I had a closet full of things that displeased the Lord: things I would SAY, things I would THINK. Until I became aware of my MOUNTAIN of tiny sins, I thought I was doing OK. After all, I was fully occupied with the Lord’s work. I was at my computer for hours each day, preaching every Sunday, and shepherding my flock. I didn’t see how I could be too far from a committed life.

But when I took a good look at all my SMALL disobediences, they easily compared with the more GROSS SINS! No wonder God couldn’t shower His blessings on me. I was outside the shower!

When I went to the Lord about them, He was quick to show me what I had to do to be in the PLACE OF BLESSING. He also made it clear that I was not to keep this knowledge to myself. That is why I share it with you.

ABOUT THOSE SMALL SINS

I am going to mention some and then give a sample of one:

OUR THOUGHT- LIFE

DEDICATING OUR BODIES

THE USE OF OUR TIME

SPENDING OUR MONEY

EXPLOITING OUR TALENTS

SERVING HIM AT WORK

“God sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart” (1 Sam. 16:7).

Sin begins in the mind. Before an action is ever performed physically, it first happens in our thoughts. “The thought is father to the deed,” said Emerson. Many acts occur in the mind that are never carried out in the flesh. Yet, God sees them all. To Him, the THOUGHT is the same as the deed.

Matthew 5:27 states, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ 28. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Unless we discipline our thinking, the devil beholds our lack of mental discipline. He watches our minds flit from idea to idea, like a bee going from flower to flower. At the right moment, he DROPS HIS IDEAS into our thought-stream, and we take it from there. In this way, we become AWFUL sinners in our minds.

I am not thinking solely of the LUST Jesus mentioned. I’m thinking of the WORRYING that goes on. The FEARS Christians allow. The jealousies, bitterness, unforgiveness, and greed in this PLACE where we think NO ONE SEES, are HORRIBLE in God’s eyes. You don’t need to be a great Bible scholar to figure this out, once you are alerted to it.

IN THE PLACE OF BLESSING

Right off, it’s obvious we have got to do something about that mountain of SMALL SINS. But you can’t tackle the whole thing at once. You have got to select a TARGET AREA and COMMIT YOURSELF to work at it. When I say commit, I mean a 100% COMMITMENT.

But here is the exciting part—just getting started PUTS YOUR FOOT IN THE SHOWER. God can’t wait to bless you. Once you LOOSEN HIS HANDS, blessings will start to splash on you. I can’t always convince you with a single article. But I do know the Holy Spirit can bear witness as you read this, so you can say …

TESTIMONIES

FILLED THE GAP: “I have enjoyed LOVETT’S LIGHTS ON THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT so much that I felt the Lord wanted me to send a special donation to you. I am in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy and unable to attend church. Your book is really helping to fill the gap. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide your pen as you write and teach us about Him.” (J.H.—GA)

RECEIVED DELIVERANCE: “I just read your book, DEALING WITH THE DEVIL. Wow! What an eye-opener, what truth the Holy Spirit gave you. I received deliverance from reading the book. I have done everything I know to do to overcome, but to no avail. Nobody is teaching the truth like your book. It took me coming to prison, but now I see it’s worth it! God bless you and He has!” (D.V.—MI)

STARTING TO OVERCOME: “For the first time in my 13 years as a Christian, I am now starting to be an overcomer. With the wonderful information and help I’ve found in your books, God has shown me how to go about it. Words can’t express my gratitude to our great God for the understanding He’s given you and to you for allowing Him to use you.” (D.C.—CA)

BLESSED & GROWING: I have Lovett’s Lights on JOHN and ACTS and have been truly blessed by them. I’ve been teaching LOVETT’S LIGHTS ON JOHN. The people are getting blessed and growing in the Lord, as I am also.” (J.N.—TN)
